Since Donald Trump re-entered office, he has been aggressive in his policies and the way he leads the American people. His Make American Great Again campaign also known as Trumpism, a term coined during his 2016 campaign has divided the United States and the world.
What is Trumpism?
Trumpism is a political movement that encompasses the political ideologies associated with President Trump and his political base. It comprises ideologies such as right-wing populism, right-wing anti-globalism, national conservatism, neo-nationalism and features significant illiberal, authoritarian and at times autocratic beliefs.
While President Trump’s way of doing things primarily affects the American people, there are global ramifications.
What are the Effects of Trumpism?
There are negative and positive effects of Trumpism but perhaps the biggest consequence of Trumpism is how the United States is now viewed as a place to reside or visit.
For many, the United States has been a popular destination, however with President Trump taking a stance on many issues including entry into the U.S, it no longer holds the appeal it once did. Media outlets across the globe have reported that international arrivals of non-citizens into the United States have fallen by 11% since March 2024. Several European countries including the United Kingdom, Germany, Denmark and Finland have updated their travel advisories for citizens visiting the U.S., warning that updated visas and valid documents no longer guarantee entry into the United States.
Canadian author, Stephen Marche reminisced in a recent article about the changes that have taken place in a country he once loved. In the 1980’s he would regularly travel through the United States from Canada. His family was waved through at the border without so much as a second glance. There was no need for a passport to enter the U.S from Canada at that time. Today, you wouldn’t dare cross the Canada – U.S. border without a passport. In fact, you may even consider not travelling to the United States at all.
“You need clear eyes at the border today. Europe and Canada have issued travel advisories after a series of arbitrary detentions, deportations to foreign jails without due process and hundreds of valid visas pulled or voided amid a sense of general impunity. While I have crossed the border a hundred times at least, sometimes once a month when I lived there, I cannot say when I will see America again, and I am quite sure I will never return to the country I once visited. The America I knew, the America I loved, has closed.” [1] – Stephen Marche, Author.
His sentiments are reflected by many around the world. Those from other countries that once sought out America as their new home, are now considering other options.
While most local residents will just have to grin and bear Donald Trump’s leadership, for some there is a way out. United States citizens are allowed to hold multiple passports. A significant number of U.S. citizens hold dual citizenship and for those with the means, the option of living in another country is a possibility.
Where to Go
With the current uncertainty in the United States, now is a good time for those who were considering leaving the U.S. and living abroad to do so. Australia’s geographic distance from the United States and the world of Trumpism makes it a favourable destination. Considering Australia as a new home is not only an option for Americans but also for those from Canada and other countries around the world.
Many families worldwide would have considered sending their children to the United States to study but for many reasons won’t consider it now – whether because they won’t be able to enter America or they’re just not comfortable with Trumpism. So now, rather than going to expensive universities in the U.S. they’ll be looking at different countries and Australia could be a beneficiary.
Reasons to Consider Australia
There are many reasons why people around the world should consider Australia as their home, including:
– Excellent career opportunities
– Quality healthcare system
– Superior education system (six Australian universities are ranked in the top 100 globally)
– Relaxed lifestyle
– Vibrant food scene
– Family-friendly
– Iconic tourist attractions
Nobody knows what the long-term effects of Trumpism will be, however Australia can offer a solution to those seeking an alternative to the United States which will not only benefit potential residents but Australia as a whole.
