VETASSESS: What You Need to Know

VETASSESS partners with governments, educators and businesses to assess skills, test capabilities and create bespoke education and training solutions. Authorised by the Australian Government, VETASSESS assesses the qualifications and work experience of prospective migrants.

Having a skills assessment is a requirement for skilled migration to Australia. It’s an important part of the occupation recognition process and will determine if visa applicants have the skills and knowledge to work in their nominated occupation in Australia. VETASSESS offers skills assessments for a variety of professional and trade occupations.

Skills Assessments for Professionals

VETASSESS assesses more than 360 occupations across various industries. Some of the professions they assess include:

  • Marketing Professional
  • Management Consultant
  • Cafe or Restaurant Manager
  • Food Technologist
  • Internal Auditor
  • Landscape Architect

Skills Assessments for Trades

VETASSESS can assess 27 trade occupations, including:

  • Electrician
  • Cook and Chef
  • Motor Mechanic
  • Welder

The application process will be determined by whether you have a professional occupation or a trade occupation.

If you’re a professional, your qualifications will be assessed against the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) to determine the relevance of your qualifications for your nominated occupation. The employment assessment involves determining whether your work experience regardless of whether it was obtained in Australia or overseas is at an appropriate level to your nominated occupation. You need a positive assessment of both your qualifications and your employment for your skills assessment to be successful.

If you have a trade occupation, you have two pathway options available for a skills assessment. The difference between pathways is whether or not you already have recognised Australian qualifications or licences for your trade.

Pathway one is for tradespeople who don’t have an Australian qualification or licence. If this is the case, in order to apply, you will need to provide evidence of your employment, skills and knowledge. Once reviewed, if it meets the requirements for assessment, you will be invited to do a practical assessment and/or technical interview. If you’re successful in the assessment and/or interview you will get a Successful Skills Assessment Result letter.  Unsuccessful candidates can apply for a reassessment or review.

Pathway two is for tradespeople with an Australian qualification or occupational licence. You will need to provide evidence of your Australian qualifications. Evidence of your work experience will also need to be provided. Once reviewed, if your qualifications and work experience meet the requirements, you will be invited to a technical interview. If successful, you will receive a Successful Skills Assessment Result letter. Unsuccessful candidates can apply for a reassessment or review.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will it take to process my skills assessment?

Every assessment is different and processing times vary. Factors that can impact processing times include:

  • The volume of applications received
  • The complexity of the application
  • Whether a complete set of required documentation was lodged

What if my documents are not in English?

If your documents are not in English, then you need to get them translated by a registered translation service. When submitting documents, you must submit copies of the original documents as well as the English translations.

How are professional occupations categorised?

VETASSESS has categorised professional occupations into groups A, B, C, D and E in accordance with the indicative skill level on the Australian New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO).  ANZSCO is a skill-based classification used to categorise all occupations and jobs for profit in the Australian and New Zealand labour markets.

Each group provides one or more pathways to meet the criteria for a positive outcome for occupations in that group.

I have extensive work experience in a field highly relevant to my nominated occupation but no formal qualifications. Can I still apply for a skills assessment?

VETASSESS Skills Assessment applications require an assessment of both qualifications and employment against the criteria for your nominated occupation.

Will I need to submit additional documents for VETASSESS to provide point test advice?

A VETASSES S skills assessment for migration purposes involves assessing your qualifications and employment against the suitability of your nominated occupation. VETASSESS also provides date deemed skilled and points test advice as part of positively assessed applications. No additional documents are required for this. To add more employment or qualifications for points test advice, applicants will need to apply for a renewal application.

Is it mandatory to have continuous job experience with one employer or is work experience with different employers acceptable?
Employment does not have to be continuous or only with one employer, but combined employment periods must meet the minimum duration requirements. You also need to show the employment was at the required skill level of the nominated occupation.
