Australia has long relied on skilled migration to fill labor shortages in sectors critical to the economy. Over the years, visa programs have evolved to reflect changing workforce needs. Replacing the Temporary Skills Shortage (TSS) Visa on 7 December 2024, the Skills in Demand (SID) Visa remains a Subclass 482 visa but came with important updates designed to make it easier for employers to hire overseas talent and for skilled workers to live and work in Australia.
Key differences between the SID visa and TSS visa
The key pathway to meet the labour shortages in Australia is the Skills in Demand (SID) visa, which was previously called the Temporary Skills Shortage (TSS) visa. While both share some similarities, there are significant differences in eligibility, flexibility, and long-term prospects.
Visa Streams
Previously, the TSS Visa had separate short-term and medium-term streams, with different occupations which could sometimes be confusing for employers and applicants. The SID Visa streamlines the process with simplified streams – core skills and specialist streams with clear eligibility criteria, making it easier for both skilled workers and employers to understand the right pathway.
Pathways to Permanent Residency
One of the most significant improvements of the SID Visa is the clearer route to permanent residency. While the TSS Visa offered limited pathways, mostly through the medium-term stream, the SID Visa allows eligible workers to transition to permanent residency via programs like the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS).
Work Experience Requirements
The work experience requirement has been reduced from two years under the TSS Visa to just one year for the SID Visa. This change provides greater flexibility for casual, part-time, or interrupted work, allowing more workers to meet the eligibility criteria.
Visa Duration
Under the TSS Visa, short-term stream visas were valid for up to 2 years, and medium-term stream visas for up to 4 years. The SID Visa now offers a four-year visa duration across all streams, providing more certainty for skilled workers and helping employers plan long-term staffing needs.
Flexibility for Workers
The SID Visa provides enhanced flexibility, not only with shorter work experience requirements but also in accommodating a wider range of work types and employment patterns and visa transition options.
